Digital Museum of Memories: Preserving Community Heritage Amidst Urban Renewal in Addis Ababa

Addis memories

With the support of HBS Horn of Africa, the Digital Museum of Memories seeks to document and preserve the stories, images, and memories of residents, business owners, and institutions affected by urban renewal in Addis Ababa. This transformation has reshaped historical neighborhoods such as Piassa, Sarbet, and Kazanchis, displacing long-standing communities and altering the city’s cultural landscape.

A community-led committee has developed guidelines for collecting and curating contributions to a 3D virtual gallery, ensuring they are respectful, accurate, and inclusive. By creating this digital archive, the project aims to safeguard Addis Ababa’s rich and diverse heritage, ensuring that the voices and histories of those displaced are remembered and shared for generations to come.

Help us save what can’t be rebuilt. While skyscrapers rise, the alleyways, conversations, and everyday coffee moments that shaped Addis Ababa are quietly fading.

Addis Memories is working to preserve the soul of the city—one story, one photo at a time. This isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s about protecting our heritage.

Be part of Ethiopia’s first online virtual exhibition by visiting https://addismemories.org or scanning the QR code, and share a photo or a memory that holds meaning.

Together, let’s build a home for the past before it disappears for good.
